Do Canada passport holders need a visa to visit IQ?
Canadian passport holders need a visa to enter Iraq. Since 1 March 2025 the federal visa-on-arrival scheme was suspended for Canada and 36 other nationalities, so Canadians must now obtain an eVisa online via the official portal (evisa.iq) before travelling, for a stay of up to 30 days. Note: Canada's government advises against all travel to Iraq. A Canadian (ordinary passport) traveller going to federal Iraq for tourism must hold a pre-arranged visa. Iraq launched an electronic visa (eVisa) system in April 2024, and from 1 March 2025 it suspended visa-on-arrival for 37 nationalities, including Canada — meaning Canadians can no longer obtain a visa at Baghdad airport and must apply for the eVisa online beforehand. The federal eVisa grants a single visit of up to 30 days and is also valid for the Kurdistan Region. The fee is roughly USD 160. The Kurdistan Region also operates its own separate eVisa platform (around 100,000 IQD) valid only for that region; to travel onward from Kurdistan into the rest of Iraq, a distinct federal Iraqi visa is required. Passports must be valid at least six months. Travellers whose passports show Israeli stamps face additional screening for federal Iraq (but not for Kurdistan). Stays beyond 10 days require registration with the Iraqi Residence Office. Critically, the Government of Canada maintains an "Avoid all travel" advisory for all of Iraq, including Kurdistan, due to terrorism, armed conflict and kidnapping risks, and Canada's embassy in Baghdad has suspended consular operations.
