Do Canada passport holders need a visa to visit IL?
Canadian ordinary passport holders are visa-exempt for tourist visits to Israel but must obtain an approved ETA-IL (Electronic Travel Authorization) online before departure. It costs ILS 25, is valid up to 2 years (or until passport expiry), and permits stays of up to 90 days per visit. As of January 1, 2025, Israel requires nationals of visa-exempt countries — including Canada — to hold an approved ETA-IL (Electronic Travel Authorization) before boarding a flight or otherwise entering the country. Canadians do not need a traditional sticker visa for tourism or short visits, but without an approved ETA-IL they will be denied boarding. The ETA-IL is a fully online process (no passport mailing), costs ILS 25 (roughly CAD 9-10), and is electronically linked to the passport. It is valid for up to 2 years from issue, or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, and authorizes multiple entries with stays of up to 90 days per visit. Applicants should apply at least 72 hours before the expected arrival date; most approvals are returned within 72 hours, though many come within minutes. The Canadian passport must be valid for at least 90 days beyond the planned date of entry. Israel is not part of the Schengen Area, so the EU Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply here. Note that, separate from entry rules, the Government of Canada maintained an "Avoid all travel / Avoid non-essential travel" advisory for parts of Israel and the Palestinian territories as of 2026 due to the security situation; travelers should check travel.gc.ca before booking.
