Australian ordinary passport holders need a visa to enter Turkmenistan. Tourists must first obtain a Letter of Invitation (LOI) certified by Turkmenistan's State Migration Service through a licensed Turkmen travel agency, then apply at a Turkmen embassy/consulate or collect the visa on arrival at Ashgabat airport on the basis of the approved invitation. Turkmenistan is one of the most restrictive countries in the world for independent travel and offers no visa-free or genuine open visa-on-arrival access to Australian citizens. For a short tourist visit, the process is built around a Letter of Invitation (LOI): only a state-recognised Turkmen travel agency or tour operator can request the LOI, which must be certified by the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan (SMST) and is valid for 3 months from certification. LOI approval typically takes around 3 weeks. Once the LOI is approved, the Australian traveller either submits a visa application form, photo and passport copy to a Turkmen embassy/consulate, or presents the approved invitation to collect the visa on arrival at Ashgabat International Airport (and certain land borders). Consular fees scale with stay length, entries and urgency: a single-entry tourist visa for up to 10 days is around USD 35, one month around USD 55, with multiple-entry and longer validities costing more. Passports must be valid at least 6 months beyond intended departure, and proof of onward travel is required. Turkmenistan is not in the Schengen area, so the Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply. Turkmenistan's parliament amended its Migration Law in April 2025 to legally enable an electronic visa that would remove the LOI requirement, but as of 30 May 2026 the e-visa platform is not yet operational and the implementing presidential decree (categories, fees, duration) remains pending, so the traditional LOI-based system is still in force. Travellers should plan at least 4-6 weeks ahead.
