Australian ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for short tourist visits to Romania. Romania has been a full Schengen Area member since 1 January 2025, so Australians can enter visa-free and stay up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the whole Schengen zone. Romania is a full member of the Schengen Area (air and sea borders opened 31 March 2024; land borders lifted 1 January 2025). As a Schengen state, Romania applies the common short-stay policy: Australian passport holders are visa-exempt and may stay for tourism, business or family visits for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. No advance authorisation is required to enter today. The European Entry/Exit System (EES) is operating at Schengen external borders, so on arrival Australians register biometric data (fingerprints and a facial photo) at the border at no cost and with no pre-application. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is expected to launch in the final quarter of 2026; once live it will require Australians to obtain a EUR 7 online authorisation before travel, but as of 31 May 2026 ETIAS is NOT yet required and entry remains fully visa-free. Travellers should carry a passport valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen Area (many sources advise six months to be safe), proof of onward/return travel and sufficient funds. Note the 90-day allowance is shared across all Schengen countries combined, not 90 days per country.
