Australian passport holders need a visa for Mozambique. Australia is NOT on Mozambique's visa-exempt/eTA list, so the recommended route is the tourist eVisa, applied for online before travel via the official VFS Global-managed portal (evisa.gov.mz). A visa on arrival exists but is risky and not recommended, especially since airlines now verify entry authorisation before boarding. As of 31 May 2026, Australian (ordinary) passport holders require a visa to enter Mozambique for tourism. Mozambique launched a revamped digital visa/eTA platform on 11 February 2026, operated in partnership with VFS Global, with final decisions retained by the National Migration Service (SENAMI). Mozambique grants visa-exempt entry (now via a mandatory eTA) to about 29 countries including the US, UK, Canada, most EU states, Japan, South Korea, China, Russia and the UAE — Australia is NOT among them. Australians must therefore obtain a visa; the practical and recommended channel is the tourist eVisa, applied for online at evisa.gov.mz before departure. A visa on arrival is technically available at major ports of entry but is widely discouraged: it carries refusal risk, and since 2026 airlines are responsible for confirming travellers hold valid entry authorisation before boarding. The tourist eVisa is intended for stays of up to 90 days; visa-on-arrival stays are typically capped at 30 days. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months and have at least 2-3 blank pages. Apply at least 1-2 weeks before travel. Fees are paid in Mozambican metical (MZN) with an additional VFS service fee; figures below are current published estimates and should be reconfirmed at payment, as the new portal's pricing has been in flux.
