Do Australia passport holders need a visa to visit MW?

Australian passport holders need a visa for Malawi. Following Malawi's reciprocity-based policy change on 3 January 2026, Australia lost its prior visa-free access. Apply online for an eVisa before travel via the official portal evisa.gov.mw; a visa on arrival is also available at designated ports for eligible categories, but applying in advance is strongly recommended. As of 31 May 2026, Australian ordinary passport holders require a visa to enter Malawi for tourism. Malawi briefly granted Australia visa-free entry under a February 2024 liberalisation, but on 3 January 2026 it introduced a reciprocity-based regime: nationals of countries that require visas of Malawians (which includes Australia, since Malawians cannot use Australia's ETA and need a full visitor visa) must obtain a Malawi visa. Australia is not on Malawi's retained visa-exempt list. The recommended channel is the official electronic visa (eVisa) at evisa.gov.mw, which the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services strongly encourages travellers to obtain before departure. The standard tourist single-entry eVisa costs about USD 50, is valid 90 days from issue, permits a stay of up to 30 days, and is processed in roughly 5-10 working days. Multiple-entry options (6-month, 12-month) range up to about USD 250. A visa on arrival remains available at designated ports of entry for eligible ("Category Two") travellers, but advance application reduces delays and refusal risk. Passports must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry. This is not Schengen-related and ETIAS does not apply.
