Do Australia passport holders need a visa to visit MR?
Australian passport holders need an eVisa to visit Mauritania for tourism. Apply online via the official ANRPTS portal before you travel. Visa-on-arrival ended on 5 January 2025, so an approved, printed eVisa with QR code is now required before boarding your flight. As of 31 May 2026, Australian ordinary passport holders are not visa-exempt for Mauritania and must obtain an electronic visa (eVisa) before arrival. Mauritania launched its eVisa system in January 2025; from 5 January 2025 the previous visa-on-arrival channel was discontinued, and by June 2025 Mauritanian embassies stopped issuing visas, directing all applicants to the online eVisa instead. Travelers apply through the official Agence Nationale du Registre des Populations et des Titres Securises (ANRPTS) portal at anrpts.gov.mr, selecting a stay length (30, 90 or 360 days) and travel purpose (Tourisme for tourism). After approval, which typically takes 2-3 business days, the applicant prints the eVisa with a QR code to present at the airport. The eVisa fee for a 30-day single-entry tourist visa is commonly cited as around EUR 55 / USD 60 and is generally paid in exact cash (EUR or USD) on arrival in Mauritania. Passports should be valid for at least six months beyond the intended stay. Mauritania is in West/North-West Africa and is NOT part of the Schengen area, so the Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply. Because Mauritania is the destination, travelers should confirm fee and payment specifics on the official portal before departure, as posted amounts can vary by nationality and visa length.
