Australian ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for tourism in Latvia. You can enter visa-free and stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen area. As of 31 May 2026 the EU's ETIAS travel authorisation is not yet required (launch expected in the last quarter of 2026), so a valid passport is all you need for now. Latvia is a member of the EU and the Schengen area. Australia is on the EU/Schengen visa-exemption list and is confirmed by the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a country whose citizens may enter without a visa for short stays. Australians may visit Latvia (and the wider Schengen area) for tourism without a visa for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period; this limit is cumulative across all Schengen states, not per country. The passport must have been issued within the previous 10 years and remain valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended date of departure from the Schengen area. The Entry/Exit System (EES) records biometric data (fingerprints and a facial photo) at the external border on arrival. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is a pre-travel online authorisation that visa-exempt nationals, including Australians, will need once it becomes operational; the EU currently schedules ETIAS to launch in the last quarter of 2026, after which a transitional grace period applies. ETIAS is not required as of 31 May 2026. For longer stays, work, study or other non-tourist purposes, a national visa or residence permit is required.
