Do Australia passport holders need a visa to visit IL?

Australian ordinary passport holders do not need a traditional visa for short tourism in Israel, but since 1 January 2025 they must obtain an approved ETA-IL (Electronic Travel Authorization) online before flying. It costs 25 NIS, is valid for two years (multiple entries) and permits stays of up to 90 days. Australia is one of Israel's visa-exempt countries, so Australians travelling for tourism or a short visit do not require a consular visa. However, Israel launched the mandatory ETA-IL (Electronic Travel Authorization, also branded Marom) system, which has been required for all visa-exempt air travellers since 1 January 2025 and remains in force in 2026. The ETA-IL is applied for online via the official Population and Immigration Authority portal (israel-entry.piba.gov.il), costs 25 NIS, and is generally approved quickly (travellers are advised to apply at least 72 hours before departure). An approved ETA-IL is electronically linked to the passport, is valid for two years or until the passport expires (whichever is sooner), allows multiple entries, and each visit may last up to 90 days. Airlines verify the ETA-IL at check-in and will not board passengers without it. The ETA-IL does not guarantee entry; final admission is decided by border officers at Ben Gurion Airport. Israel is not part of the Schengen Area, so the Schengen 90/180 rule and EU ETIAS do not apply to entry into Israel.
