Do Australia passport holders need a visa to visit HU?

Australian ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for short tourist visits to Hungary. As an EU Schengen member, Hungary admits Australians visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. ETIAS is not yet required (launch expected Q4 2026). Hungary is a member of the Schengen Area, and Australia is on the EU's visa-exempt list (Annex II). This means Australian ordinary passport holders can travel to Hungary for tourism, business or family visits without a visa for stays of up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period. The 90-day allowance is shared across ALL Schengen countries combined, not per country, so days spent in France, Germany, Italy or any other Schengen state count toward the same total. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area and have been issued within the previous 10 years. You may be asked at the border to show proof of onward/return travel, sufficient funds, accommodation details and travel insurance. From the fourth quarter of 2026 (October-December), visa-exempt travellers including Australians will additionally need an approved ETIAS travel authorisation (a EUR 20 online pre-authorisation, free for under-18s and over-70s) before boarding to the Schengen Area. As of 31 May 2026 ETIAS is NOT yet in force, so no advance authorisation is needed for travel right now. For any stay longer than 90 days, or for work or study, a national Hungarian long-stay (Type D) visa or residence permit is required.
