Do Australia passport holders need a visa to visit AF?
Australian passport holders need a visa for Afghanistan. As of 2026 the simplest route is the official single-entry tourist e-Visa applied for online before travel (entry via Kabul International Airport only). Note: the Australian Government advises "Do Not Travel" to Afghanistan. Afghanistan is not a visa-free or visa-on-arrival destination for ordinary Australian passport holders, and it is not part of the Schengen area. Every traveler (except those born in Afghanistan or to Afghan parents) needs a visa. In March 2026 Afghanistan launched an official online e-Visa system that allows tourists, including Australians, to apply digitally without visiting an embassy. The e-Visa is single-entry, valid for 90 days from issue, permits a maximum stay of 30 days, and may currently only be used when arriving through Kabul International Airport. Total cost is roughly USD 130 (about AUD 200) covering an application fee, the visa fee, and a payment-processing fee; standard processing is 1-3 weeks with same-day express available. The Embassy of Afghanistan in Canberra still issues paper visas to applicants in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, but it is winding down consular services and operations are set to be suspended after 30 June 2026, making the e-Visa the more reliable channel. Critically, the Australian Government (Smartraveller/DFAT) maintains its highest "Do Not Travel" advisory for the whole of Afghanistan due to terrorism, kidnapping, arbitrary detention and armed conflict; holding a valid visa does not make travel safe or advisable.

For guidance only — visa rules change with little notice. Always confirm directly with the destination's embassy or foreign ministry before booking non-refundable travel. Information here applies to ordinary (non-diplomatic) passports unless noted.
