No visa is required. Austria and Belgium are both EU member states and members of the Schengen Area, so Austrian citizens enjoy full freedom of movement and can travel to Belgium with just a valid national ID card or passport. An Austrian ordinary passport holder needs no visa to visit Belgium for tourism. As an EU citizen, the Austrian traveler benefits from the EU right of free movement, which guarantees entry to Belgium for tourism, business, study, or work without any visa, registration, or time limit on short stays. Both countries are inside the Schengen Area, so there are normally no systematic border checks when crossing between them. A valid Austrian national identity card or passport is sufficient to enter and to prove identity to airlines, rail, and ferry carriers. The Schengen 90/180-day short-stay rule and the upcoming ETIAS travel authorisation apply only to non-EU visa-exempt nationals, not to EU citizens, so neither restricts Austrian travelers. ETIAS (expected operational in late 2026 with a transition period into 2027) explicitly exempts EU/EEA/Schengen citizens. The only practical requirements are carrying a valid government-issued photo ID and observing standard customs and security rules. There is no fee and no application process for an Austrian to visit Belgium.
