South Africa to Uruguay visa requirements

South African ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for tourism in Uruguay. You can enter visa-free and stay up to 90 days, extendable for a further 90 days at the Dirección Nacional de Migración. As of 2026, holders of an ordinary South African passport can travel to Uruguay for tourism or a short visit without obtaining a visa in advance. On arrival you are admitted for a tourist stay of up to 90 days, which can be extended once for an additional 90 days at Uruguay's National Migration Directorate (Dirección Nacional de Migración) in Montevideo. This is a reciprocal arrangement: Uruguay grants visa-free entry to South Africans, and South Africa grants the same to Uruguayans. Uruguay is in South America and is NOT part of the Schengen Area, so the Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply. To enter you simply present a passport valid for the duration of your stay (six months' validity is widely advised as a safe margin), along with proof of onward or return travel and evidence of sufficient funds for your visit. The visa-free entry covers tourism and short visits only; it does not authorise paid work, for which a separate work visa or residence permit is required. Overstaying the authorised period can result in fines and future entry restrictions, so travelers should either depart or formally extend before the 90-day permit expires.
