South Africa to Tanzania visa requirements

South African ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa to visit Tanzania for tourism. You can enter visa-free and stay up to 90 days, provided your passport is valid for at least 6 months with 3 blank pages. Holders of an ordinary South African passport enjoy visa-free access to the United Republic of Tanzania (mainland and Zanzibar) for tourism and transit. The Tanzanian High Commission in Pretoria lists South Africa among the countries whose nationals are exempt from visa requirements, and this exemption permits a stay of up to 90 days. No visa fee applies and no eVisa application is required for tourists. At the port of entry (e.g., Julius Nyerere International Airport, Kilimanjaro International Airport, or land borders) you must present a passport valid for at least six months beyond your intended return, with a minimum of three blank pages, plus a return/onward ticket and proof of accommodation. Note that the exemption covers tourism and transit only — travel for business, employment, study or volunteering requires the appropriate visa or permit. Travelers to Zanzibar must additionally purchase mandatory inbound travel insurance from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (in force since 1 October 2024). A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if you are arriving from, or have transited through, a yellow-fever-risk country. Final admission always remains at the discretion of the immigration officer at the border.
