Until 1 May 2023 South Africans could enter visa-free, but Suriname reimposed a visa requirement on 21 nationalities (South Africa among them) over concerns about abuse of the visa-free stay. South Africans do not qualify for the cheaper e-tourist card (reserved for visa-exempt-type nationalities) and must instead obtain a tourist e-visa or a regular consular visa. The fastest and recommended route is the online e-visa, applied for and paid in advance through VFS Global, the sole authorized partner of the Government of Suriname. The e-visa is available as single-entry (valid about 2 months) or multiple-entry (valid up to 1 year), with a maximum stay of up to 90 days.
