South Africa to Portugal visa requirements

Yes - South African ordinary passport holders need a Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa to visit Portugal for tourism. Portugal is in the Schengen Area, and South Africa is not on the EU visa-exempt list, so the visa must be obtained before travel via VFS Global. ETIAS does NOT apply to South Africans (it is only for visa-exempt nationals). Portugal is a member of the Schengen Area. South African nationals are not visa-exempt for the Schengen zone, so an ordinary passport holder must apply for and obtain a Schengen uniform short-stay visa (Type C) before departure. Applications are lodged in person at a VFS Global centre (Johannesburg, Pretoria or Durban) on behalf of the Portuguese Consulate General, with biometrics (fingerprints and photo) captured at submission. The visa permits short stays of up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area. The standard adult visa fee is EUR 90 (raised from EUR 80 in June 2024), payable in rand at the prevailing rate, plus a per-application VFS service fee. Standard processing is about 15 working days, but travellers should apply 4-6 weeks ahead (applications can be lodged up to 6 months before travel). ETIAS - the EU travel authorisation due to launch in late 2026 - applies only to visa-exempt nationalities and therefore does NOT replace the visa requirement for South Africans, who continue to need a full Schengen visa. Separately, the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) became fully operational on 10 April 2026; on entry to Portugal travellers register biometrics at the border, replacing manual passport stamping. Passports must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure from Schengen, issued within the last 10 years, and contain at least 2 blank pages.
