South Africa to Netherlands visa requirements

South African ordinary passport holders need a Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa before traveling to the Netherlands for tourism. South Africa is not on the EU visa-exempt list, so ETIAS does not apply. The Netherlands is part of the Schengen Area, and South Africa is a visa-required nationality for Schengen. A South African ordinary passport holder must obtain a Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa before departure for a tourist visit. Applications are submitted in person through VFS Global centres in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban (the Netherlands must be your main destination or first port of entry). The visa permits stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area. The consular fee is EUR 90 for adults, plus a VFS service charge, payable in ZAR. Mandatory supporting documents include travel medical insurance covering at least EUR 30,000, proof of accommodation, return flights, and sufficient funds (around EUR 55 per day). Because South Africa is NOT visa-exempt, the upcoming ETIAS travel authorisation does not apply to South African travelers - they continue to use the full Schengen visa. Apply well in advance: book your biometrics appointment early and submit no later than 45 days before travel; standard processing is around 15 calendar days but can take longer in peak season.
