South Africa to Mozambique visa requirements

South African ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for tourist visits to Mozambique. As a fellow SADC member, South Africa enjoys a long-standing visa-waiver: you can enter visa-free for up to 30 days. Crucially, South Africans (and other SADC nationals) are exempt from Mozambique's new ETA and the 650 MZN entry fee that apply only to the ~29 non-SADC visa-exempt countries. South Africa and Mozambique are both members of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and have a bilateral visa-abolition arrangement, so a South African ordinary passport holder can travel to Mozambique for tourism without any visa. The standard visa-free stay is up to 30 days per visit (extendable once for a further 30 days for valid reasons), and the entry effectively allows the regional cross-border movement that is heavily used at the Lebombo/Ressano Garcia land border. In 2025 Mozambique introduced an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) registered via evisa.gov.mz, carrying a 650 MZN administrative fee, but this requirement is directed at the ~29 NON-SADC visa-exempt nationalities (e.g. Canada, EU states, parts of Asia). SADC nationals such as South Africans are NOT subject to the ETA or the 650 MZN fee for short tourist stays. The ETA platform also experienced suspensions/technical resets during 2025-2026, and Mozambique launched a new portal on 11 February 2026; none of this changes the visa-free position for South Africans. Travelers should still carry a passport valid at least 6 months with two blank pages, proof of onward/return travel, proof of accommodation/funds, and be aware that yellow-fever proof can be requested if arriving from an endemic country. Because Mozambican entry rules change frequently, confirm the latest position with the official portal or a Mozambique consulate before travel.
