South Africa to Mexico visa requirements

South African ordinary passport holders need a visa to visit Mexico for tourism unless they qualify for Mexico's substitute-document exemption. The Mexican visitor visa is free of charge for South African passports. Exempt travelers include holders of a valid visa from the USA, Canada, Japan, the UK, or a Schengen country, and permanent residents of those places plus Chile, Colombia, or Peru. A South African (ZA) ordinary passport holder is in Mexico's visa-required list and is not eligible for Mexico's SAE electronic authorization, which is limited to Russian, Turkish, and Ukrainian nationals arriving by air. The standard route is a Mexican visitor visa (visitor without permission to perform paid activities) obtained in advance from a Mexican consulate; the Mexico Embassy in South Africa states visitor visas for South African passports are free of charge. Mexico's INM also recognizes substitute documents: a valid and unexpired visa from Canada, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, or any Schengen country, or permanent residence in Canada, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, any Schengen country, Chile, Colombia, or Peru, can be presented instead of a Mexican visa. The stay is up to 180 days, always at the immigration officer's discretion. Air arrivals no longer fill a paper FMM at international airports; the passport is stamped and the FMMd can be downloaded after entry, while land arrivals still use the online FMM. The 2026 DNR/visitor immigration fee is MXN 983 and is normally included in airfare for air arrivals or paid separately for land/sea entry when not included.
