South Africa to Malawi visa requirements

South African ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for Malawi. As a SADC member that grants visa-free entry to Malawians, South Africa qualifies for visa-free entry to Malawi for up to 90 days for tourism, under Malawi's 2026 reciprocity-based visa regime. As of mid-2026, South African citizens holding ordinary passports can enter Malawi visa-free for short tourist visits of up to 90 days. Malawi overhauled its visa policy in late 2025 (effective 21 November 2025, with full enforcement reported around 3 January 2026), moving to a reciprocity-based system: countries that added to an expanded waiver list but do NOT grant Malawians visa-free access must now buy an eVisa (USD 50-250). South Africa is exempt from this change because it is a SADC member that grants Malawian nationals visa-free entry (30 days), so the reciprocal visa-free arrangement is preserved. A South African traveller therefore needs only a passport valid for at least six months beyond the stay, with blank pages, and ideally proof of onward/return travel and accommodation. No visa, no eVisa, and no visa fee is required for a stay within 90 days.
