South Africa to Montenegro visa requirements

South African ordinary passport holders need a visa to visit Montenegro for tourism. Apply for a short-stay (Type C) visa at a Montenegrin diplomatic mission before you travel (in South Africa, applications are typically handled via the Serbian Embassy in Pretoria). Important exemption: if you already hold a valid Schengen, US, UK, Irish, Canadian, Australian, Japanese or New Zealand visa or residence permit, you may enter Montenegro visa-free for up to 30 days. As of mid-2026, South Africa is not on Montenegro's visa-exemption list, so an ordinary South African passport holder must obtain a short-stay (Type C) Schengen-style visa before arrival for tourism. The Type C visa permits stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period and may be issued as single, double or multiple entry (multiple-entry validity 6 months to 5 years). The official Montenegrin Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms a key shortcut: holders of a valid Schengen, US, UK, Irish, Canadian, Australian, Japanese or New Zealand visa or residence permit (or an APEC Business Travel Card) may enter Montenegro without a separate Montenegrin visa for up to 30 days. Montenegro is an EU candidate but is NOT a Schengen member and NOT part of the EU, so ETIAS does not apply to Montenegro itself. Standard documentation includes a passport valid at least 3 months beyond the intended departure, proof of accommodation, return/onward travel, travel health insurance and proof of funds (about EUR 50 per day). The consular fee is modest (roughly EUR 35-80 depending on visa type and where you apply) and decisions are normally made within 10 days (extendable to 30 or 60).
