South Africa to Ireland visa requirements

Yes — South African ordinary passport holders need a visa to visit Ireland. Since 10 July 2024 Ireland imposed a short-stay visa requirement on South African (and Botswana) nationals. For tourism you must apply online via AVATS for a Short Stay 'C' visit visa BEFORE travelling, then submit documents and biometrics through VFS Global. Ireland is not in the Schengen Area, so a Schengen visa or ETIAS does not work here, and the Schengen 90/180 rule does not apply. Ireland is a Common Travel Area / EU member but NOT part of the Schengen Area, so it runs its own national visa system. On 10 July 2024 the Irish Department of Justice introduced a visa requirement for South African and Botswana nationals in response to a sharp rise in international-protection claims. Because Ireland is outside Schengen, neither a Schengen visa nor the forthcoming ETIAS authorisation is valid for entry, and there is no visa-on-arrival or eVisa channel — the visa must be granted before boarding. A granted visa allows entry, but the final admission and length of stay (a stamp up to 90 days) is decided by an Immigration Officer at the port of entry. Travellers should apply well in advance, as processing for South Africa can take several weeks, and a granted visa is not a guarantee of entry.
