South Africa to Finland visa requirements

South African ordinary passport holders need a Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa to visit Finland for tourism. There is no visa-on-arrival or eVisa, and South Africans are NOT eligible for ETIAS (which is only for visa-exempt nationalities). Apply through VFS Global in South Africa before you travel. Finland is a member of the Schengen Area. South Africa is on the EU's visa-required list, so an ordinary South African passport holder must obtain a Schengen Type C short-stay visa before traveling to Finland for tourism. The visa permits stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area. Applications are lodged in person at a VFS Global Visa Application Centre in South Africa (Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban), where biometrics (fingerprints and photo) are collected. Required documents include a completed application form, a passport valid at least 3 months beyond the intended departure with at least 2 blank pages, travel medical insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 valid throughout the Schengen Area, confirmed round-trip flights, accommodation proof, and proof of sufficient funds (about EUR 50 per day). The consular fee is EUR 90 for adults (EUR 45 for children aged 6-11; free under 6), payable in ZAR at the prevailing rate, plus a VFS service fee. Standard processing is around 15 calendar days, though it can extend up to 45 days during busy periods. South Africans are NOT among the visa-exempt nationalities and therefore will NOT use ETIAS when it launches in late 2026 — they continue using the traditional Schengen visa route.
