South Africa to Spain visa requirements

South African ordinary passport holders need a Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa to visit Spain for tourism. There is no visa-free, eVisa or visa-on-arrival option. ETIAS does NOT apply to South Africans because they are not visa-exempt. South Africa is not on the EU Schengen visa-exempt list, so an ordinary South African passport holder must obtain a Schengen Type C short-stay visa before traveling to Spain for tourism. Applications are submitted in person through BLS International, the outsourced partner of the Spanish Embassy in Pretoria and Consulate General in Cape Town, with biometrics and a documentary file. The visa permits stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen area. The consular fee is EUR 80 for applications lodged on or before 10 June 2026, rising to EUR 90 from 11 June 2026, plus a BLS service charge (about R333). Mandatory travel medical insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 is required. Standard processing is 15 calendar days, extendable up to 45 days. ETIAS is irrelevant for South Africans: it applies only to visa-exempt nationalities, so South Africans continue to need the full Schengen visa.
