South Africa to Eritrea visa requirements

South African ordinary passport holders need a visa to visit Eritrea. There is no eVisa and no visa on arrival for South Africans — the tourist visa must be obtained in advance from an Eritrean embassy or consulate before travel. As of 30 May 2026, holders of an ordinary South African passport require a pre-arranged visa to enter Eritrea for tourism. Eritrea does not offer an electronic visa, and visa on arrival is limited to a handful of nationalities (not South Africa). Applications are lodged in person or by post at the nearest Eritrean diplomatic mission, supported by a passport valid at least six months with blank pages, a completed form, photos, proof of accommodation and onward travel, and a yellow fever vaccination certificate. The standard single-entry tourist visa permits a stay of up to 30 days and is typically valid for about 90 days from issue; multiple-entry options with 6-month or 1-year validity exist for repeat visitors. Embassy fees commonly fall in the USD 30-65 range (frequently USD 50 for a single-entry tourist visa), with processing of roughly 10-28 days. Travelers should also note Eritrea's distinctive rule that movement outside the capital Asmara requires a separate Travel Permit for Foreigners, obtained locally after arrival. Because Eritrea is in East Africa and is not part of the Schengen area, the Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply. Given the absence of any visa-free or VoA channel for South Africans, the conservative and correct verdict is visa-required.
