South Africa to Costa Rica visa requirements

South African ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for tourism in Costa Rica. South Africa is a "Group 1" nationality, allowing visa-free entry for tourist stays of up to 180 days. Costa Rica classifies foreign nationalities into four visa groups. South Africa sits in Group 1 ("primer grupo"), the most favorable category, which grants visa-free tourist entry for up to 180 calendar days. No visa, eVisa, ETA or visa-on-arrival is required and there is no application fee. The traveler simply arrives at a Costa Rican port of entry and presents the standard entry documents. The November 2025 update to Costa Rica's visa rules (which mainly affected Group 3/4 nationalities and added exemptions for those holding US/Canada/Schengen visas) did not change South Africa's Group 1 visa-free status. At immigration, the officer authorizes a stay of up to 180 days at their discretion; this period is non-extendable. Travelers must hold a passport valid for at least one day on arrival (Group 1 standard), a confirmed return or onward ticket departing within the authorized period, and proof of economic means of at least US$100 per month of intended stay. Costa Rica is not in the Schengen area, so the Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply to this route.
