South Africa to Switzerland visa requirements

South African ordinary passport holders need a Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa to visit Switzerland for tourism. There is no visa-free, eVisa or visa-on-arrival option. Switzerland is part of the Schengen Area, and South Africa is on the list of countries whose ordinary-passport holders require a visa for short stays. To visit Switzerland for tourism, a South African must obtain a Schengen short-stay (Type C / uniform) visa before travelling. Applications are submitted in person via VFS Global (Pretoria, Cape Town, Johannesburg or Durban) on behalf of the Regional Consular Centre / Embassy of Switzerland in Pretoria, by prior appointment. The visa permits stays of up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area. If Switzerland is your only or main destination (longest stay), you apply through the Swiss representation; otherwise apply through the country of your main destination. The standard adult visa fee is EUR 90 (reduced to EUR 45 for children 6-11, free under 6), payable in rand at the prevailing rate, plus a VFS service fee of roughly ZAR 476. Processing is normally up to 15 calendar days but can extend to 30-45 days in complex cases, so apply well ahead (you may lodge up to 6 months before travel). Note: ETIAS (Europe's travel authorisation, expected to launch in late 2026) does NOT replace the visa for South Africans, who remain a visa-required nationality and must continue applying for a Schengen visa.
