Do Vietnam passport holders need a visa to visit South Africa?

Yes, you need a visa. Vietnamese ordinary passport holders must obtain a South African visitor's visa BEFORE travel - there is no visa-free entry, no visa on arrival, and Vietnam is not on South Africa's eVisa/ETA eligible list. A Vietnamese ordinary passport holder cannot enter South Africa without a visa. South Africa exempts only Vietnamese diplomatic, official and service passport holders (90 days); ordinary passport holders are visa-required and must apply in advance for a visitor's visa (Form DHA-84) for tourism or a short visit. Visas are never issued at ports of entry - arriving without one means being refused boarding or returned home. Vietnam is also NOT among the nationalities eligible for South Africa's electronic visa (eVisa) or the newer Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), which as of early 2026 covers countries such as China, India, Indonesia and Mexico but not Vietnam. Applications are lodged through VFS Global visa application centres or the nearest South African mission (the South African Embassy in Hanoi / consular section covers Vietnam). The visitor's visa is typically issued for a single entry with a stay of up to 90 days. Expect to submit a completed application form, passport valid 30+ days beyond intended departure with at least two blank pages, return/onward ticket, proof of accommodation and funds (bank statements), and a yellow fever certificate if arriving from or transiting a yellow-fever country. The South African government fee is modest (around R425), but VFS service fees and supporting-document costs raise the practical total. Plan well ahead: processing commonly takes about 5-10 working days but can run longer in peak periods.
