Do Vietnam passport holders need a visa to visit Italy (Schengen)?

Vietnamese ordinary passport holders MUST obtain a Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa before traveling to Italy for tourism. There is no visa-free, visa-on-arrival, or eVisa option. ETIAS does not apply to Vietnamese nationals because it is only for visa-exempt countries. Italy is a Schengen Area member, and Vietnam is on the list of countries whose nationals require a visa for the Schengen Area. A Vietnamese ordinary passport holder visiting Italy for tourism must apply in advance for an Italian Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa, which permits stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area. Applications are lodged through VFS Global centres in Hanoi (also serving Hai Phong) or Ho Chi Minh City, with biometrics collected in person. The standard visa fee is EUR 80, plus a VFS service charge. Required documents include a valid passport, completed application, photo, round-trip flight booking, confirmed accommodation, proof of sufficient funds (3 months of bank statements), employment proof, and travel medical insurance covering at least EUR 30,000. Standard processing is up to 15 days but can extend to 30-45 days in busy or complex cases, so applying well ahead (up to 6 months before travel, no later than 15 days prior) is strongly advised. Note: the EU's ETIAS system (expected late 2026) is NOT relevant for Vietnamese travelers, as it applies only to visa-exempt nationalities; Vietnamese citizens continue to need a full Schengen visa.
