United States to Nepal visa requirements

US passport holders do NOT need a visa in advance. Nepal grants a tourist Visa on Arrival to US citizens at Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu) and major land borders, for 15, 30, or 90 days, paid in cash (USD). Pre-applying online via the Department of Immigration is optional and can speed up the airport process. As of 2026, a United States ordinary passport holder can travel to Nepal for tourism using a Visa on Arrival (VOA). No prior embassy visa is required for short visits by air. VOA is issued at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and at designated land border entry points. Three duration tiers are offered: 15 days for USD 30, 30 days for USD 50, and 90 days for USD 125. All tourist visas are multiple-entry. The passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond arrival with at least one blank page. Fees are payable in cash (USD preferred) at the visa fee counter; ATMs/exchange exist airside but carrying exact cash is recommended. Travelers can optionally complete the online application form (immigration.gov.np Online Visa Services) within 15 days before arrival to shorten queue time, but the visa itself is still issued and paid at the airport. The total tourist stay is capped at 150 days per calendar year. Extensions are handled by the Department of Immigration (minimum 15-day extension at USD 45, then USD 3 per additional day). At peak season the on-arrival process can take from 20 minutes up to several hours. Nepal is not in the Schengen area, so the Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply.
