United States to Iraq visa requirements

US passport holders need an eVisa to visit Iraq for tourism. Since 1 March 2025, visa-on-arrival has been suspended for US citizens, so you must apply online through the official portal (evisa.iq) before you travel. The eVisa costs about USD 160, is single-entry, and allows a stay of up to 60 days in Federal Iraq. As of 2026, a US ordinary passport holder traveling to Iraq for tourism must obtain an electronic visa (eVisa) in advance. Iraq formerly offered visa-on-arrival to 37 nationalities (including the US), but suspended that policy on 1 March 2025; affected travelers must now apply through the official Federal Iraq eVisa portal at evisa.iq before departure. The eVisa is a single-entry tourist visa, costs approximately USD 160, permits a stay of up to 60 days, and is typically processed within 24-72 hours. It is valid for all of Federal Iraq and is separate from the Kurdistan Region's own electronic visa system, though the federal eVisa covers entry to the Kurdistan Region as well. Applicants need a passport valid at least 6 months with a blank page, a passport photo, accommodation details and a travel itinerary. Note that the US Department of State maintains a Level 4 'Do Not Travel' advisory for Iraq, and journalists/NGO workers are excluded from the eVisa and must apply through an Iraqi embassy or consulate. Travelers should verify current details on the official portal before applying, as conditions can change.
