Do Taiwan passport holders need a visa to visit France (Schengen)?

No visa needed. Taiwan ordinary passport holders (passport showing the national ID number) can enter France and the wider Schengen area visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism. France is part of the Schengen Area. Since 11 January 2011, holders of Taiwan ordinary passports that contain the holder's national identity card number have been exempt from the Schengen short-stay visa for tourism, family visits, or business of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The passport must have been issued within the previous 10 years and remain valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure from Schengen territory. A Taiwan passport WITHOUT the ID number does not qualify for the exemption and requires a Schengen visa. As of 30 May 2026 no online travel authorisation is yet required: the EU's ETIAS system is still not operational and is expected to launch in the last quarter of 2026, after which Taiwan travellers will need a EUR 20 ETIAS authorisation before travel. The Entry/Exit System (EES) — automated biometric registration at the border — has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, so travellers should expect fingerprint and facial-image capture on first entry. At the border you may be asked to show a return/onward ticket, proof of sufficient funds, accommodation details, and travel medical insurance.
