Do Türkiye passport holders need a visa to visit AT?
Turkish ordinary passport holders need a Schengen Category C short-stay visa to visit Austria for tourism. Türkiye is not visa-exempt, so ETIAS does NOT apply — a full Schengen visa must be obtained before travel. Austria is part of the Schengen Area. As of 30 May 2026, Türkiye remains the only EU candidate country whose ordinary passport holders do not enjoy visa-free travel to the Schengen Area. A Turkish ordinary passport holder must therefore apply for and obtain a Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa before traveling to Austria for tourism. The visa permits stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across all Schengen states. Applications in Türkiye are submitted through VFS Global (the authorized external service provider for Austria) in cities such as Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya and Bursa, with biometric data (fingerprints + photo) collected and stored for 5 years. The standard visa fee is EUR 90, plus the VFS service charge. Important: ETIAS does NOT apply to Turkish ordinary passport holders — because they are not visa-exempt, they continue to require a full visa, not the cheaper ETIAS authorization. Standard processing is up to 15 calendar days (can extend to 45 days in complex cases). Apply no earlier than 6 months and no later than 15 days before travel.
