Do Thailand passport holders need a visa to visit SE?
Thai ordinary passport holders need a Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa to visit Sweden for tourism. There is no visa-free entry, and ETIAS does NOT apply to Thai nationals. Sweden is part of the Schengen Area, and Thailand is on the EU list of nationalities that require a visa for short stays. A Thai ordinary passport holder must therefore apply for a Schengen short-stay (Category C) visa before travelling to Sweden for tourism. The visa permits a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area. Applications are lodged in Bangkok through VFS Global on behalf of the Embassy of Sweden, with biometrics (fingerprints and photo) collected at the visa application centre. The official visa fee is EUR 90 for adults (about THB 3,500), payable in Thai baht, plus a VFS service fee. Typical processing is around 15 calendar days, longer in peak season. Thai nationals are NOT eligible for ETIAS (which only covers visa-exempt travellers), so the Schengen visa remains mandatory. Note the Entry/Exit System (EES) has been operating at Schengen external borders since October 2025, registering biometric entry/exit data. Since May 2026, Thai applicants with a clean travel history benefit from the EU 'cascade' rules, which can grant multiple-entry visas with progressively longer validity (1 year, then 2 years, then 5 years).
