Thailand to Romania visa requirements

Thai ordinary passport holders need a Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa to visit Romania for tourism. Romania is a full Schengen member, and Thailand is not on the EU visa-exempt list. ETIAS does not apply to Thai nationals. Romania became a full member of the Schengen Area on 1 January 2025 (air and sea border checks were lifted on 31 March 2024). Because Thailand is not on the EU list of visa-exempt nationalities, Thai ordinary passport holders cannot enter Romania visa-free. They must obtain a Schengen uniform short-stay visa (Type C), which permits stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area. The visa is applied for through the Embassy of Romania in Bangkok, which processes Schengen visa applications for residents of Thailand. The standard adult visa fee is EUR 90 (raised from EUR 80 in mid-2024), with normal processing of about 15 calendar days (extendable to 30-45 days). Applicants must show valid travel medical insurance with minimum coverage of EUR 30,000, confirmed accommodation, round-trip travel bookings, proof of sufficient funds, and evidence of ties to Thailand. The upcoming ETIAS travel authorisation does NOT apply to Thai nationals, because ETIAS is only for visa-exempt travellers; Thai citizens continue to need a full Schengen visa. Travellers should apply to the embassy of their main destination or the country of first entry. Conflicting "visa-free" claims found online refer to the reverse direction (Romanians visiting Thailand) and are not accurate for Thai citizens.
