Russian Federation to South Africa visa requirements

Russian ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for a short tourist visit to South Africa. Under a bilateral visa-waiver agreement in force since 31 March 2017, they may enter and stay visa-free for up to 90 days per visit for holiday or business. Just carry a valid passport, a return/onward ticket, and proof of funds. South Africa is not in the Schengen area, so ETIAS does not apply, and South Africa's new ETA is not mandatory for visa-exempt nationals like Russians. South Africa and Russia operate a reciprocal visa-waiver agreement that took effect on 31 March 2017. Russian citizens holding an ordinary (non-official) passport are exempt from visas for tourism/holiday and business visits not exceeding 90 days, and Russia is listed in South Africa's "90-day" visa-exemption category by the Department of Home Affairs. No application, fee, or pre-approval is required before travel; entry is granted at the port of entry by an immigration officer who issues a visitor's visa-free entry stamp. The passport must be valid and contain at least one or two blank visa pages; immigration officers may ask for a return/onward ticket, proof of sufficient funds, and accommodation details. The exemption does not cover work, study, or the SASTS exchange programme, which still require the appropriate visa. South Africa is not a Schengen state, so the Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS are irrelevant here. South Africa is rolling out an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), but as of mid-2026 it is being applied to visa-requiring markets (initially China, India, Indonesia, Mexico) and is explicitly NOT mandatory for visa-exempt nationals such as Russians, though they may optionally apply for faster border processing. Conservatively, Russian ordinary passport holders should still verify validity dates before departure and confirm their stay does not exceed the 90-day limit, which can be extended once by a further 90 days through Home Affairs while in South Africa.
