Russian Federation to Tajikistan visa requirements

Russian ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for Tajikistan. Under the 1992 CIS visa-free movement agreement, Russians enter visa-free for tourism and short visits with no fixed limit, but must register with OVIR (Migration/Internal Affairs) if staying more than about 10 days. Tajikistan is not in the Schengen area; it is a Central Asian member of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Russia and Tajikistan are both parties to the Bishkek Agreement of 9 October 1992 on visa-free movement of citizens within the CIS, which remains in force in 2026. As a result, holders of ordinary Russian passports may enter Tajikistan visa-free for tourism, business, and family visits, and the visa policy classifies Russia in the "unlimited period" stay category rather than a fixed 30/90-day cap. Travel must be on a valid passport; while CIS internal ID rules historically allowed some flexibility, the safe and standard practice is to travel on a valid Russian international (foreign-travel) passport. The principal compliance obligation is registration: visitors staying beyond roughly 10 working days (about 14 calendar days) must register at the local Department of Visas and Registration (OVIR) within the Ministry of Internal Affairs / migration service; hotels typically handle this for guests. No visa, eVisa, or visa-on-arrival is needed for short tourist stays, so the verdict is visa-free. Note separately that a reciprocal change affects travel in the other direction: from 30 June 2025 Russia requires visa-free foreign visitors (including Tajik citizens) to obtain an electronic entry authorization (QR code) before arrival, but this does NOT affect Russians entering Tajikistan.
