Russian Federation to Sweden visa requirements

Russian ordinary passport holders need a Schengen Type C short-stay visa to visit Sweden for tourism. There is no visa-free, eVisa, or visa-on-arrival channel. ETIAS does not apply to Russian nationals because they remain visa-required. Note: as of 2026, Sweden's Embassy in Moscow and VFS Global are generally not accepting standard tourist visa applications, and the EU-Russia Visa Facilitation Agreement is fully suspended. Sweden is part of the Schengen Area, and Russia is on the EU's list of nationalities requiring a visa for entry. A Russian ordinary passport holder must obtain a Schengen Type C (short-stay) visa before traveling for tourism, allowing a maximum stay of 90 days within any 180-day period across the whole Schengen zone. Since the EU-Russia Visa Facilitation Agreement was fully suspended on 12 September 2022 (Council Decision (EU) 2022/1500), Russians pay the full 90 EUR fee (not the previously reduced 35 EUR), face longer processing, and provide more extensive documentation. Effective 16 December 2025, the European Commission restricted Russian applicants residing in Russia to single-entry visas in most cases, with limited exceptions (close family of EU citizens, transport workers, journalists/dissidents on a case-by-case basis). Critically, Sweden's Embassy in Moscow and VFS Global in Russia currently state that standard Schengen visa applications are not being accepted, with exceptions only for urgent/compelling situations after direct embassy approval; many applicants apply through other Schengen states or Swedish missions in third countries. ETIAS (launching 2026) applies only to visa-exempt nationalities and therefore does NOT cover Russian passport holders, who continue to need a full visa. Travelers should default to the visa-required pathway and verify current application channels directly with Swedish authorities before booking.
