Russian Federation to Hungary visa requirements

Russian ordinary-passport holders need a Schengen Type C (short-stay) visa to visit Hungary for tourism. There is no visa-free, eVisa, or visa-on-arrival option, and ETIAS does not apply to Russian nationals. The visa must be obtained in advance from a Hungarian consulate or authorized visa application centre (VFS Global) before travel. Hungary is a full member of the Schengen Area, so Russian citizens require a uniform Schengen Type C visa for tourism or any short visit. Following Russia's full invasion of Ukraine, the EU fully suspended its 2007 EU-Russia Visa Facilitation Agreement effective 12 September 2022, which removed all simplified treatment for Russian applicants: the visa fee rose from EUR 35 to the standard EUR 80, more supporting documents are required, processing is slower (commonly several weeks), and multiple-entry long-validity visas are issued far less often. The EU has not imposed a blanket ban on issuing visas to Russian nationals, and most member states (including Hungary) continue to process tourist applications, but each application is now assessed strictly on its merits. A Schengen visa permits stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area. ETIAS, the EU travel authorisation expected to become mandatory in late 2026, applies only to visa-exempt nationalities and therefore is NOT available to Russian citizens, who must continue using the traditional visa route. Applicants should note tightening passport-validity rules across the EU (some states no longer recognise certain non-biometric 5-year Russian passports). First-time applicants must appear in person to give biometrics (fingerprints and a photo), which are then stored in the Visa Information System for up to five years.
