No visa needed for short tourism, but you must obtain an approved ESTA before boarding. Portugal is a Visa Waiver Program country, so Portuguese ordinary passport holders travel ESTA-only for stays up to 90 days. Portugal is a participating country in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program (VWP). A Portuguese ordinary passport holder traveling to the United States for tourism does not need a B-2 visitor visa for stays of 90 days or less, but MUST hold an approved Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before boarding a U.S.-bound air or sea carrier. The traveler must carry a valid electronic (chip) passport. An approved ESTA costs USD 40.27 in FY 2026: USD 10.27 is charged for each application and an additional USD 30 is charged only if approved. ESTA is generally valid for up to two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, and permits multiple entries. The 90-day VWP stay cannot be extended or changed to another status while in the U.S. Note that the VWP is unavailable to anyone who has visited Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria or Yemen on or after 1 March 2011 (or Cuba on or after 12 January 2021), or who is a dual national of Cuba, Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Sudan or Syria; such travelers must instead apply for a B-2 visa.
