Portugal to Japan visa requirements

Portuguese ordinary passport holders can travel to Japan visa-free for tourism, staying up to 90 days under the reciprocal visa-exemption arrangement. Portugal is on Japan's visa-exemption list for short-term stays. As an ordinary Portuguese passport holder you may enter Japan for tourism, business visits, or visiting friends/relatives without a visa, receiving "Temporary Visitor" status valid for up to 90 days. No paid or income-earning work is permitted. Your passport should be valid for the duration of your stay (six months' onward validity is widely recommended), and immigration may ask for proof of onward/return travel and sufficient funds. Japan is NOT in the Schengen area, so the Schengen 90/180 rule does not apply here. Japan's planned electronic travel authorization, JESTA, is not yet in force — it is targeted for fiscal year 2028 (no later than 31 March 2029), so no advance online authorization is required as of 30 May 2026.
