Q: Can I travel with just my national ID card?

Yes. A valid Portuguese national ID card (Cartão de Cidadão) is sufficient; a passport is also accepted but not required.

Q: Does ETIAS apply to me?

No. ETIAS is a future requirement only for non-EU visa-exempt travellers. As an EU citizen you never need ETIAS to enter Germany or any Schengen country.

Q: Is there a 90-day limit on my stay?

No. The Schengen 90/180 rule applies only to non-EU visitors. As an EU citizen you can stay indefinitely; you only need to register your address if you reside for more than three months.

Q: Will my passport be stamped or checked at the border?

Generally no. Both countries are in Schengen, so there are no routine internal border checks, though police may carry out spot identity checks, so carry your ID.

Q: What if I want to live or work in Germany?

You may work or settle freely without a permit. For stays over three months you must register your address (Anmeldung) at the local registration office, but no residence permit is issued.

No visa needed. Portugal and Germany are both EU and Schengen members, so a Portuguese ordinary passport holder enjoys full EU freedom of movement and can enter Germany visa-free with no time limit. As a Portuguese national, you are an EU citizen, and Germany is a fellow EU and Schengen member state. Under EU freedom of movement (Directive 2004/38/EC), you have the right to enter, travel, live, work, study and stay in Germany without a visa or residence permit. The Schengen 90/180 short-stay limit and the upcoming ETIAS authorisation do NOT apply to you — those rules govern only non-EU travellers. To enter, simply carry a valid Portuguese passport or national ID card (Cartão de Cidadão); since Portugal and Germany are both in Schengen, there are normally no systematic border checks on internal land, sea or air routes, though police may still ask for ID. For tourism and short visits there are no formalities at all.
