Q: Can I travel using only my Polish national ID card?

Yes. A valid Polish national identity card (dowod osobisty) is accepted for entry to Lithuania; a passport is not mandatory for EU citizens.

Q: Does the Schengen 90/180-day rule apply to me?

No. The 90-days-in-180 limit applies to non-EU visitors. As an EU citizen you can stay in Lithuania indefinitely; you only need to register residence if you stay longer than 90 days.

Q: Will I need ETIAS to enter Lithuania?

No. ETIAS, expected to start in late 2026, applies only to visa-exempt non-EU travelers. EU citizens, including Poles, are exempt.

Q: Are there border checks between Poland and Lithuania?

Both countries are in the Schengen Area, so there are normally no systematic passport checks at the internal land border. You should still carry valid ID at all times.

Q: What if I want to live or work in Lithuania?

You can move freely, but for stays over 3 months you must register with the Lithuanian Migration Department and obtain an EU citizen residence certificate.

No visa is required. As a Polish citizen with an EU passport, you have freedom of movement and can travel to Lithuania for tourism or any short stay with just a valid passport or national ID card. No visa, no ETIAS, and no entry fee apply. Both Poland and Lithuania are member states of the European Union and the Schengen Area. Under EU freedom-of-movement rules, Polish citizens may enter, stay, work, study, and reside in Lithuania without a visa or any prior travel authorization. For travel you only need a valid Polish passport or a valid Polish national identity card (dowod osobisty) - either is accepted. There is no maximum stay limit for tourism: the Schengen 90/180 short-stay rule does NOT apply to EU citizens travelling within the EU, and if you intend to remain longer than 3 months you simply register your residence with the local Lithuanian authorities (Migration Department). The forthcoming ETIAS travel authorization (expected to start in the last quarter of 2026) applies only to visa-exempt non-EU nationals and does NOT apply to Polish or other EU citizens. There are no border-crossing fees. Because Poland and Lithuania share a land border and both are in Schengen, there are normally no systematic passport checks at the internal border, though carrying identification remains a legal requirement.
