New Zealand to Sweden visa requirements

No visa needed. New Zealand ordinary passport holders can enter Sweden visa-free for tourism for up to 90 days within any 180-day period under the Schengen short-stay rules. Sweden is part of the Schengen Area, and New Zealand is on the EU's visa-exempt list. As of 30 May 2026, NZ ordinary passport holders may travel to Sweden for tourism without any visa or pre-travel authorisation, staying up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the entire Schengen zone. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area and issued within the last 10 years. Border officers may ask for proof of onward/return travel, accommodation, and sufficient funds. Two upcoming EU systems affect this route: the Entry/Exit System (EES), which records biometrics (fingerprints and a photo) at the border and replaces passport stamping, and ETIAS, a mandatory online travel authorisation expected to launch in the last quarter of 2026 (with a transitional grace period before full enforcement). ETIAS is not a visa — it costs EUR 20, is valid for three years (or until passport expiry), and is linked to your passport. Until ETIAS becomes mandatory, no advance authorisation is required for short tourist stays.
