Q: How long can I stay in Norway without a visa?

Up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. This limit is shared across all Schengen Area countries, not counted separately for Norway.

Q: Do I need ETIAS to travel to Norway now?

Not yet. ETIAS is expected to become operational in the last quarter of 2026. Until then, no online pre-travel authorisation is required. After launch it will cost about EUR 20 and be valid for 3 years.

Q: What is the EES and will it affect me?

The Entry/Exit System is now live. On arrival in Norway or any Schengen country, your face and fingerprints are registered digitally instead of your passport being stamped. There is no fee.

Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years and remain valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area.

Q: Can I work in Norway on a visa-free stay?

No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, family visits, and short business meetings only. Paid employment requires a separate work/residence permit.

No visa needed. New Zealand ordinary passport holders can enter Norway visa-free for tourism for up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen Area. Norway is part of the Schengen Area, and New Zealand is on the EU/Schengen list of visa-exempt nationalities. As of 30 May 2026, an NZ ordinary passport holder can travel to Norway for tourism or a short visit without any visa, staying up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period (counted across all Schengen states combined, not per country). The Entry/Exit System (EES) is now fully operational at Norwegian and Schengen border crossings, so on arrival you will be registered biometrically (facial image and fingerprints) instead of receiving a passport stamp. The ETIAS travel authorisation is NOT yet required: it is expected to become operational in the last quarter of 2026, followed by a transitional grace period. Until ETIAS launches, no pre-travel online authorisation is needed. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen Area and have been issued within the previous 10 years.
