New Zealand to Italy visa requirements

New Zealand ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa to visit Italy for tourism. As a Schengen member, Italy allows visa-free short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. ETIAS pre-travel authorization is expected to launch in late 2026 but is NOT yet required as of 30 May 2026. New Zealand is on the EU's visa-exempt list, so Kiwi ordinary passport holders can enter Italy and the wider Schengen Area for tourism, business or family visits without a visa for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day window. Your passport should be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen Area and issued within the last 10 years. Border officers may ask for proof of onward/return travel, accommodation and sufficient funds. Two new EU systems affect future trips: the Entry/Exit System (EES), a biometric border-registration system being phased in, and ETIAS, a mandatory online travel authorization for visa-exempt nationals (including New Zealanders). ETIAS is expected to become operational around the last quarter of 2026, followed by a transitional grace period; it is NOT required as of 30 May 2026. When it launches it will cost EUR 20, take minutes to apply online, and stay valid for 3 years (or until the passport expires). Until then, New Zealanders simply travel visa-free.
