🇳🇱Netherlands🇮🇪IrelandNL-IE Netherlands to Ireland visa requirements
Dutch passport holders do NOT need a visa to visit Ireland. As EU citizens they enjoy freedom of movement and can enter Ireland visa-free for tourism. No ETIAS or ETA is required because Ireland is outside the Schengen Area and EU nationals are exempt from ETIAS entirely. Bring a valid passport: Ireland sits outside Schengen and conducts its own border checks, so an ID card is not guaranteed acceptance for non-resident travellers. A Netherlands ordinary passport holder is an EU citizen and therefore travels to Ireland under EU/EEA freedom of movement rules, not under any visa regime. No visa, no eVisa, no visa-on-arrival, and no travel authorisation are required for a short tourist stay. Crucially, Ireland is NOT in the Schengen Area (it opted out of Schengen and operates its own immigration controls as part of the Common Travel Area with the UK). This means the Schengen 90/180-day short-stay rule does NOT apply, and the EU ETIAS travel authorisation (launching late 2026) does NOT apply to Ireland at all. ETIAS in any case never applies to EU citizens. Under free movement, a Dutch citizen may stay in Ireland for up to 3 months with no formalities; staying beyond 3 months is permitted if working, self-employed, studying, or self-sufficient with health cover, with no residence permit needed (an optional EU Treaty Rights/registration process exists but no card is issued to EU nationals). At the border the traveller must present a valid travel document. While EU law recognises a national ID card for free movement, Ireland's practice is that carriers and immigration generally expect a valid passport for travel to Ireland, so a passport is the safe choice. There is no fee of any kind for entry.
