Netherlands to Spain visa requirements

No visa. Dutch citizens are EU nationals with full freedom of movement, so they can enter Spain for tourism with just a valid Netherlands passport or national ID card, with no time limit on short stays. The Netherlands and Spain are both members of the European Union and the Schengen Area. As an EU citizen, a Dutch ordinary passport holder enjoys the right of free movement and does not need a visa to enter Spain for tourism or any other purpose. A valid Netherlands passport or national identity card is sufficient; there are no border controls at internal Schengen crossings (for example, flying from Amsterdam to Madrid). The Schengen 90/180-day short-stay rule does NOT apply to EU citizens - it applies only to non-EU visa-exempt nationals. A Dutch citizen may stay in Spain indefinitely for tourism, and may also live, work, study, or retire there. For stays exceeding 3 months, the only formality is registering with local authorities to obtain a Certificate of Registration as an EU Citizen (Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Union). The upcoming ETIAS travel authorisation (expected to launch in late 2026) does NOT apply to EU citizens; ETIAS only affects nationals of visa-exempt third countries such as the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. In short, travel between the Netherlands and Spain is as simple as domestic travel within either country.
