Malaysia to Turkmenistan visa requirements

Malaysian ordinary passport holders need a visa to visit Turkmenistan, and a Letter of Invitation (LOI) from a licensed Turkmen travel agency is required first. The visa is then stamped at the Turkmenistan Embassy in Kuala Lumpur (or, with a pre-approved LOI, obtained on arrival in Ashgabat). As of 2026-06-03, there is no visa-free, e-visa, or unconditional visa-on-arrival channel for Malaysian ordinary passport holders traveling to Turkmenistan for tourism. The Embassy of Turkmenistan in Kuala Lumpur confirms that all ordinary-passport travelers must hold a certified Letter of Invitation (LOI) issued by the State Migration Service, normally arranged through a licensed Turkmen tour operator or travel agency (e.g. "Turkmen Syyahat"). The LOI is valid for 3 months from confirmation and currently takes roughly 10-21 working days to approve. Once the LOI is approved, the traveler submits a visa application to the Turkmenistan Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, where standard processing is about 10 business days (3 business days for emergency) and fees are paid in cash US dollars. A visa-on-arrival option exists at Ashgabat International Airport, but only for travelers who already hold an approved invitation letter; it is valid for 10 days and extendable a further 10 days. Diplomatic and service passport holders are visa-exempt, but this does not apply to ordinary tourists. Turkmenistan is NOT in the Schengen area, so the Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply. Note: President Berdimuhamedow signed a decree on 18 April 2025 to introduce electronic visas and abolish the LOI requirement, but as of mid-2026 the e-visa platform is not operational and no launch date is confirmed, so the LOI route remains mandatory. Travelers should confirm directly with the embassy before booking, and a passport valid at least 6 months is required.
