Do Mexico passport holders need a visa to visit AT?
Mexican ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for short tourist visits to Austria. As a Schengen member, Austria allows visa-free stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. ETIAS travel authorisation is expected to become required only in late 2026 (Q4); it is not yet mandatory as of 30 May 2026. Mexico is on the EU's visa-exempt list for short stays, so Mexican ordinary-passport tourists may enter Austria and the wider Schengen area without a visa for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. No fee or application is required today: travelers present a valid passport at the external Schengen border and may be asked to show proof of accommodation, return/onward travel, sufficient funds, and travel insurance. The 90/180 limit is cumulative across ALL Schengen countries, not per country. A change is coming: the EU's ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) will apply to visa-exempt nationals including Mexicans and is scheduled to start operations in the last quarter of 2026, after a transition period. Once live, ETIAS will cost EUR 20 (free for under-18s and over-70s), be valid for 3 years or until passport expiry, and be obtained online before travel. As of 30 May 2026 ETIAS is not yet required, so the current verdict for a short tourist trip is visa-free.
